During lockdown, I had started painting again, yet despite my excitement, I was finding that I was soon getting stuck into the pressure of trying to create a ‘finished’ piece of art. As we had all been told to stay at home, it was difficult to go out and find new inspiration… I was trying to create a beautiful painting having nothing fresh to focus on.
I stumbled across the ‘30 day sketchbook challenge’ on instagram by insightcreativecoaching and thought I would give it a go. The concept was simple - one small work of art a day : not precious : all play : no rules. There is something about working in a sketchbook that is so freeing and creative. I started to experiment with collage and different mediums. If I created a page that I didn’t love, I would just layer more paint on top or fold into it to create something even more unique.
It was so interesting to see how much my work had progressed and developed in those 30 days. I started off quite timid in my approach and towards the end I was producing pages with a lot more movement and interest. Now I have a sketchbook full of new ideas and inspiration to throw back into my studio work.
Here are a few of my favourite pages from those 30 days. If you want to see more then check out my instagram page: hayleychildsart
